BMKG and the Red and White Processing System Consortium Strengthen the Strengthening of the Earthquake Information System and Tsunami Early Warning, the Work of the Nation’s Children.
BMKG AND MERAH PUTIH PROCESSING SYSTEM CONSORTIUM CONFIRM STRENGTHENING OF EARTHQUAKE INFORMATION SYSTEM AND TSUNAMI EARLY WARNING WORK OF THE NATION’S CHILDREN April 16, 2025 Fahmi Dendi Saputra Headlines Jakarta, April 16, 2025 – The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) continues to intensify the digital transformation steps of the earthquake and tsunami early warning system by strengthening cooperation with the Merah Putih Processing System Consortium (Sispro) team. In a follow-up meeting held in Jakarta, the Acting Head of BMKG, Dwikorita Karnawati, was present to lead the strategic discussion, accompanied by the Deputy for Geophysics and a team from the MKG Instrument Standardization Center. This meeting is an important moment in evaluating and following up on the progress of the implementation of the Sispro Merah Putih system which carries artificial intelligence (AI)-based technology to increase the speed and accuracy of earthquake and tsunami information. Dwikorita emphasized that the system strengthening process does not only focus on the technological aspect, but also includes a full commitment to the nation’s independence in building a reliable early warning system. In an open dialogue with the technical team and system developers, operational challenges that are still encountered were also discussed, such as the need to improve computer processor specifications (High Performance Computing) and optimize the simulation process. BMKG appreciates the significant progress that has been achieved, where almost all of the main features of the system, both conventional and AI-based, have reached 100 percent. “We are grateful, finally Sispro Merah Putih is able to answer the challenges and prove that we are able to build a national system with the spirit of technological independence,” said Dwikorita. He added that this system has also taken into account the depth of the earthquake source as one of the bases for tsunami modeling, which previously had not been comprehensively accommodated in the previous system. Not only that, this meeting also agreed on the scenario for the continuation of the development of Sispro which will enter the second phase. One of them is optimizing the use of the APC (Advanced Processing Computer) supercomputer that has been specially prepared for the Merah Putih system, in order to strengthen the BMKG operational system. Parallel system simulations will be carried out on the APC owned by Maritime Meteorology, as part of the validation process and comparison of system performance. BMKG also emphasized that the Merah Putih Sispro is not instant. “Building a system like this is a long-term investment in the independence and safety of the Indonesian people,” said Dwikorita. She also emphasized that the success of Sispro is the result of close collaboration between the government, academics, and national research institutions. The meeting was closed with an emphasis on the importance of cross-sector synergy in ensuring the continuity and improvement of the earthquake and tsunami early warning system that was fully developed by the nation’s children.
