Protecting the Coast, Saving the Future: Guardian to Rescue on Kalaotoa, Madu, and Karumpa Islands

Tim Guardian x Rescue tiba di Pulau Madu
The Guardian x Rescue Team of the Bandung Institute of Technology carried out real action activities at the tip of the Selayar Islands, precisely on Madu and Karumpa Islands on September 7-9, 2025. The lecturers involved in the trip were lecturers from the Oceanography Study Program (Dr. rer.nat Rima Rachmayani and Karina Aprilia Sujatmiko, Phd) and the Geodesy-Geomatics Study Program (Gabriella Alodia, Phd) in collaboration with the local government represented by staff from the Selayar Regency Marine and Fisheries Service, Mrs. Hasry, S.Pi and Brawijaya University as one of the speakers (Mrs. Dewa Ayu Putu Eva Wishanti, PhD). However, this community service program was also initiated with Dr. Eng. Faruq Khadami and Brian Bramanto, PhD who were unable to sail the sea with us. Student assistants consisted of students from the Oceanography Study Program – ITB and students from Hasanuddin University, Makassar.
Karina Aprilia Sujatmiko, S.Si., M.T., Ph.D., provided a disaster evacuation map to the Pulo Madu village head. The purpose of this activity was to provide education regarding marine resources and potential disasters to all groups, including elementary and middle school students, as well as the general public.
Dr. rer. nat Rima Rachmayani is providing information on Indonesia’s marine potential. This is due to Madu Island and Karumpa Island’s proximity to earthquake sources and the potential for tsunamis, which they experienced in 1992 and 2021.
Marine Potential and Disaster Education for Pulo Madu Middle School Students The following day, activities focused on elementary and middle school students through interactive learning about the ocean, simple practices related to marine phenomena, and disaster mitigation efforts. This activity concluded the Guardian x Rescue team’s activities on Karumpa Island. That afternoon, the group returned to Kawawu Harbor to spend the night before departing home on the Sabuk Nusantara ship early the next morning.
The Guardian x Rescue team conducted an experiment with Pulo Madu Middle School students. The output of this bottom-up ITB 2025 community service program was a teaching module for elementary and junior high school students, as well as disaster evacuation maps for three islands: Madu, Karumpa, and Kalaotoa.
Resource person, Ms. Eva from Brawijaya University, provided information about disaster evacuation teams. We hope that what we have presented will be beneficial and impactful for elementary and middle school students, as well as the local community. We hope this will foster a desire to protect their marine resources, such as mangroves, seagrass, and coral reefs. They will also learn how to evacuate from potential disasters, especially tsunamis, which could threaten them. Guardian x Rescue Team
